Cambridge igcse french

Subject Information

Cambridge IGCSE French  is designed for students who are learning French as a foreign language.  The course develops a set of transferable skills for understanding and communicating in everyday situations.  

French is spoken in many countries in the world, notably in West and North Africa and Canada.  This offers many work and cultural opportunities to those who speak French.


The linked language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing are built on as learners progress through their studies.

Syllabus Content

The aims of the  French as a foreign language course are to enable students to:
  • gain an insight into the culture and society in countries where French is spoken;
  • develop the language proficiency required to communicate effectively in French;
  • acquire the vocabulary, grammar and structures to communicate confidently in five topic areas: 
     A.  Everyday activities
     B.  Personal and social life
     C.  The world around us
     D.  The world of work
     E.  The international world

IGCSE French Exams

All students sit four papers  in this examination:

Paper 1; Listening 45 minutes (25% of the marks)
Paper 2: Reading 1 hour (25% of the marks)
Paper 3: Speaking 10 minutes (25% of the marks)
Paper 4: Writing 1 hour (25% of the marks)

Course codes: 7156 (1-9), 0520 (*A-G)

​Prior Learning & Hours of Study

  • We recommend that learners studying French have studied French for at least 2 years.
  • It is recommended that 130 hours should be dedicated to complete the subject. However, the number of hours a learner needs to achieve the qualification may vary according to their previous study of French.
